Powers of the Monk - Icarus
Based in the city where it all happens Pontiac, Detroit, and Ann Arbor, Powers of the Monk has been steadily building a unique identity in the indie music scene. The duo band consists of David S. Monk, whose multi-instrumental talents and vocals drive their sound, and CasSondra "Pontiac" Powers, who adds a haunting depth with her violin and vocals. Together they craft music that feels both timeless and innovative. They recently have gone on a professional adventure and have roped in Dani Macchi as their producer. This endeavour has given the world Icarus. Icarus is the latest release by the duo. It unravels like a vivid dream that pops and gracefully ebbs and flows with texture! Its opening is moody and atmospheric, with shimmering synths painting an expansive canvas. The strings are especially what stand out instrumentally in the song, they have a variety of them. It almost feels as though this is the bridge on which classical, folk and modern strings/ musical styles meet. They have a swoon-worthy and slow Doo Bop soundscape going on in the song. The production, helmed by Macchi, is a perfect balance of polished and raw, allowing the track’s lush instrumentation to shine without overshadowing its vocals. He manages to successfully walk that tight rope. A song would fit in perfectly in a musical like The Gods The Gods The Gods by Wright&Grainger which debuted in London (2023). We could also imagine it in a series as expertly written as Good Omens. Either way, the track is dynamic on a whole other level. it not only lures you in but leaves you reflecting long after the final note fades—a beautiful fusion of depth, melody, and storytelling. Powers of the Monk is a duo you have to keep an eye out for!
