Infinite Light - Flo Frequency
Someone should write a paper on how R&B is the perfect genre to dance to, and Flo Frequency just proves it with her latest release, Infinite Light. This latest album is the definition of versatile; it is as though Flo runs a multi-terrain relay race where she experiments with thoughts, feelings, textures, tempo and pace all in one album. She gives us a dense set of sounds to bite into, from pop-RnB to slow jazz; you name it, and she’s got it. Only You Flo Frequency You don’t feel the hour pass when you hit play, especially with a voice like hers, which could make a stone melt in a giffy. Right from the start, we know she means business. Only You begins with her vocals, and by the end of it you’re staying for the brilliant backing. When we hear the sax, it is as though a portal into a new dimension opens up, and we can see the stairway to heaven. This track is just the first song, and we have a whole lot of music to swim through. Flex Flex is a number that explores a very different kind of pop RnB; we hear flutes and guitar tango, and it gives us a performance of its own. This particular number brings out the Rihanna energy in the team. The vocals are fast-paced, and the musicality of it is not compromised at any point; we hear trills and belts that keep our heads bobbing and wanting more. The synth on this number reminds us of the mid-2010s, when slow synth pop was on the rise. A distinct style, where the music drastically and whimsically tapers away, is the signature style of this number. You Need To Know Too We end with a refreshing and slow number with You Need To Know Too and Keep Shining (Remix). There is one difference in these numbers and the rest of the songs: the only thing that shines is vocals. Of course, it shines because the number has been produced brilliantly from start to finish, but we can hear the vocal gymnastics her voice can do, and you just keep increasing the volume. We can hear the strength and work she truly puts into it. How can you ever resist an album filled with so much substance? I think the incredible mix of genres and energy is what makes this album so special, much like we see in Living Special. The sitcom was in close competition with Friends at the time but did technically have superior writing. Flo Frequency has the ability to skew time altogether; she laces all her music with magic that demands you pay attention. It is only elevated with the band that supports and pushes the number above and beyond. Everything about this album is addictive!
