ReeToxA - Double A Side (Akaroa/Erica and the Stars).
There is a blissful abandon that creeps in as you listen to folk/Indigenous music, and ReeToxA has mastered the art of whipping up the perfect release, Double A Side (Akaroa/Erica and the Stars). They have a blend of genres in this album; it’s funny because they managed to do it in 4 (technically 2) songs. The Melbourne/Naarm-based band truly creates timeless pieces; they seem to merge the past, present, and future in the texture of sounds they employ in their music. Akaroa by ReeToxA Akaroa seems to be a ballad of love, as the singer serenades his lover; the track mirrors the same frenzy of newfound love. It’s quick and upbeat and doesn’t pause to reflect or ruminate on its thoughts. Much like the writer/singer, the song too wears its heart on its sleeves: the bass guitar, drums, and the electric guitar—everyone! This doesn’t mean that the song is just rushed; they have found time and space for each instrument to shine. Akaroa ebbs and flows like rainwater that has broken open the floodgates and dams, like someone who experiences their love entirely. Erica and the Stars shine between notes Erica and the Stars exemplify the theme of allowing yourself to experience the intensity of your feelings entirely and all at once. This is especially true when he says, “The real world’s not for me." This feeling resonates with many, particularly those who are star-crossed lovers. The idea that love will survive despite all odds is an emotion that stands out in this number. You also somewhat hear the tiredness in the treatment of the song, the feeling that strength in times of adversity and testing times can be draining. Akaroa and Erica and the Stars Karaoke It is interesting that the band released their Karaoke numbers with the album, which makes for a lovely experience. Not having to work with karaoke tracks that refuse either to go with the pace and pitch of our voice or go with the original song’s pitch and pace is everyone’s nightmare; however, with this number, that changes. It is also a pleasant surprise to listen to just the audio backing without the vocals to fill a car during a commute. The album is perfect for storytelling; both the songs with vocals and the karaoke numbers each carry different meaning while still holding onto the same spirit of storytelling. The track would be the perfect addition to a film like 50 First Dates. Everything about the songs and the film goes together: the immediacy of love that Henry (Adam Sandler) feels and the determination to fight for your love, even if it means fighting amnesia! The tracks are breathtaking; the melody surprises you with each new stanza, with masterful storytelling by ReeToxA on all fronts.
