Emily Barker - Fragile as Humans
May we all wear our hearts boldly on our sleeves as Emily Barker does in Fragile as Humans, her latest album release. She brings in the wonder and mystery of the world through her country and folk intuitions. Not many artists possess the gift of casually mesmerizing their listeners with words that are casually thrown at us as if they weigh as light as a feather when in reality they carry the world’s light between them. And Emily gracefully does exactly that throughout this album. I can’t wait to unpack this beautiful gift she offers to the universe. Emily Barker and With Small We Start A fascinating quality that most folk artists possess is their ability to become one with nature. They tuck bits and pieces of it within their work. So much so that you are left wondering if they have also left pieces of them between nature as well. The album is peppered with light numbers such as this opener which sweetens the palette as we ready ourselves for a journey unlike anything out there. She plays with so many moods in this album, we go from tracks like With Small We Start to The Quiet Ways. It's as though she has the ability to gently sway with us in front of the refrigerator light. Wild To Be Sharing This Moment And then we have songs like Wild To Be Sharing This Moment. As if she traces the outline of the Alps with her words. This has to be one of my favorite songs in the album. Her pen must be laced with the essence of truth. ”How can we study the wounds of our history and still send our children to war.”. It is true that the pen is more mightier than the sword, for it has the power to shatter backbones and make them with its words. Acisoma Barker is a wonderful singer, she is patient, word by word, note by note, she folds herself and neatly fills the gaps of the wounds that time has left us with. This track is the sweetest of them all and yet somehow painful. She rhymes and sings using this very rare species of dragonfly as her muse. She leaves us with curiosity and question in Acisoma. The only assurance music brings to the table is that it will leave you with a feeling. What feeling? Who knows! This thought-provoking album is one that pushes our understanding of nature and our role within it. She makes sure we remember that we are only a cog in the machine and not the entire machine itself. And yet somehow opens our eyes to how wonderfully delicate our strong hearts are. A film that has this much wonder and awe woven into the very fabric of its story is Alice In Wonderland. Fragile as Humans would be brilliant in this story. I could go on and on about how beautiful a performer Emily Barker is but you’d much rather see it for yourself.
