Naoko Hiranuma - Sea of Light
There is a timelessness to music by Naoko Hiranuma, and her latest release, Sea of Light, allows you to take a deep dive into everyday heartbreak and resilience. Naoko is a traveller at heart and allows the sea to regulate her life. She is a singer-songwriter who makes music with her heart, giving us listeners a string from it to hold onto while she weaves us a sonic blanket for support. She isn’t a writer with potential; she’s already there as an artist, and the world better open its eyes to her breathtaking work. Naoko keeps her instrumentation simple in terms of the density of the instruments used. We hear just the drums, the piano and her voice in this number. Just with that, she kicks the dirt off the floor in an earnest attempt to find her feet as a lost soul. She acknowledges the pain, loneliness and yearning in the journey before she is hit by a sea of light, pushing her to the edge. The production of the song is exquisite. We are consistently hit by the intensity of the pain she feels in the pauses, the timing and the vocal variation she brings to the table. Her vocals evoke a spine-chilling sensation. The imagery that the lyrics and her voice provide is breathtaking. There is a search for an end to the torment of a broken relationship while still holding onto a version of your love. Holly does the same with Gerry in P.S. I Love You. Naoko Hiranuma is a daughter of the sea. She pulls us in and coughs us out of her world like a whirlpool of talent. We are at the mercy of her voice that is sweeter than a sea siren's.
