Keyse - Testify

In a world that is adamant about rejecting you time and time again, Keyse rises up from the ashes and sucker punches them in the face with Testify. The singer-songwriter is a fierce artist who is gaining popularity in the Midwest indie punk-rock scene. She adds a thick layer of pop over her punk-rock music is the secret ingredient to her delicious music. That and the fact that she gives a voice to rage. She's encapsulated this angsty feeling one feels on a day-to-day basis in society. Especially when it comes to its vicious opinions on beauty. The track begins with this curious electric guitar section that grabs our attention, and the track builds with the vocals. The production, instrumentals, and vocals on this track are top-notch, but what gives it the winning touch is the drama. The attention to detail is immaculate. There is this boxing bell sound effect that adds a whole new level of spice to the song. It is almost as though she is in a constant state of war with society, either having to prove them right or wrong. The whole track is about how tired she is of this game.  This fresh energy of rage against the beauty standards in the song is uniquely universal, specifically to women. That is because it’s unreasonable. We see this in films like Easy A and Mean Girls, and Testify would be a perfect addition to these films. It is mostly a byproduct of patriarchal, internalised misogyny. While I can go on a rant, Keyse sums it up perfectly when she says, “Life’s unfair, so what are you scared of?”.
