Watch Me Die Inside - Fantasy Girl (Cover)

Having a crush is an instant dopamine hit. From a normal conversation with someone to imagining your entire future together because they smiled at you twice, is a whole ride in itself. Watch Me Die Inside’s cover of “Fantasy Girl” is a sonic representation of that rush. Although Johnny O's original 80's version had a more 80's dance music vibe, this new interpretation is rock and instrumental-oriented. But the coolest part is that it is layered over the original dance music theme. The song takes the main theme of the song and turns it into an edgier, more intense mix. Sometimes, we become so caught up in how we feel about someone that we start assuming they feel the same way. We build expectations, read too much into little things, and convince ourselves that there's something special happening. Reality, unfortunately, doesn't always get the memo. The lyrics also talk about getting so caught up in this "fantasy" and pedestalizing the other person. Often the rose-tinted glasses wear off and it becomes difficult to get them off that pedestal. The jangly high-energy guitars, drums and booming basslines create that electrifying soundscape, mirroring how it feels to experience this in real life. This track would fit right into the movie "Materialists (2025)" that portrays love and loss the same way.
