Evelí Ray - Particles
With an otherworldly start that is synth-heavy and mysterious, Particles begins by creating a tense atmosphere, and Evelí Ray cuts through it with her singing. Even without paying attention to the lyrics, I knew that this song uplifts in a peaceful, almost meditative way. The dramatic drums that ebb and flow in short crescendos and drops create anticipation from the start. It provided the tension that the song needed, and when the singing started, it created a beautiful juxtaposition. Ray sounds elegant and encouraging, like she is the embodiment of hope, blooming from a bed of doubt and suspicion. I was surprised when the song slowed down for the chorus. I was expecting the chorus to be full and cinematic. But it helps to move the tone of the song to become completely hopeful, the singing carrying the section. When the instrumentation from the beginning comes back this time, the music swells and then goes back to the snare-like drums that are reminiscent of a marching band. But this time the strings have also taken on the hopeful tone of the singing. The song entirely accepts the message of the lyrics. The refrain is comforting and warm as it says, "Maybe you finally find your home; maybe you remember where you belong." A meditative art pop single, Evelí Ray wanted this song to "be the message of hope for those of us who forgot how precious and needed they are." The Rumi-inspired lyrics combined with the beautiful and ethereal production definitely succeed in letting us know that we are all invaluable to this world. A reminder that we need every now and then, wonderfully expressed.
