Autonym - Not Today
sWest Yorkshire Hard Rockers Autonym release blisteringly heavy, heady statement of intent, 'Not Today' Listeners of brilliant alt-rock/hard rock, the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, Black Sabbath, Alter Bridge, rejoice! This tightly synced four-piece group delivers a track packed with power, personality, and defiance. From start to finish, 'Not Today' is a track that stamps its authority upon you with sharp riffs, monstrous backlines, and gritty, in-your-face vocals. We open onto wailing, apocalyptic notes, ones that grab your attention right away. You can't help but think of that scene from Mad Max: Fury Road, with the mutant, blind guitar player playing a flame-throwing electric guitar atop Immortan Joe's militia vehicle. It evokes the same kind of awe! Thuddering basslines join in, along with crisp hi-hats, as the track gathers steam and fire! Heavy, drawn-out riffs set the stage alight, heralding the start of the opening verse. Urgent, intense, Ozzy-like vocals tell a terrifying tale of being trapped, pursued by some ungodly presence. The build-up of tension is fantastic in the verse, leading into the explosive yet groove-laden chorus with the collective voices of Autonym defiantly stating, 'Not Today'. Intriguingly, the following verse tells the madman's perspective. The lyrics are a primal exploration of the most basic of survival instincts. In the constant fight between prey and hunter, each is trying their level best to oust the other. To earn the right to say 'Not Today' Just at the 2 min mark, the best part of the track starts to roll forward with an unstoppable force. It's truly an earth-shattering, delicious, heavy, but also compellingly melodic, rhythmic instrumental section. We circle through another brief round of 'Not Today' before signing off in style with a circular riff and shout. Phew! What A RIDE! Savor this tantalizingly heavy hard rock experience from the very impressive Autonym!
