Throes NYC - Always, Baby

Throes NYC kick off their new EP "The Wires Out" with the hard-hitting “Always, Baby,” a ditty that trip hop with Lana Del Rey vibes, creating a fresh sound that defines the duo's music. They have appropriately named this genre - alt-triphop. You can hear elements of dark alt-pop, trip-hop and electronic music throughout its soundscape. Its rhythm moves at an unhurried pace, while melancholic vocals take the center stage to create a moody, sultry atmosphere. You can also hear a distinct vintage New York feel running through it, particularly in the nods to the city’s 90s and 2000s alternative scene. The overall production makes it sound gritty and contemporary. Listening to the song felt like a sepia-tinted memory playing in reverse in your head, at night when you are lying in bed all alone. The song starts off relatively straightforward, with the skeleton of a pop song clearly in place. Eventually, in its progression, it takes a bold route full of grit and attitude. Distorted guitars add an atmospheric layer, keeping the vintage flavour alive. Thematically, the song centers on loyalty and the messy business of staying with someone when a relationship gets complicated. Every act of romance raises doubt and suspicion. Those of us who have been a part of a "situationship" will totally relate to this feeling. I could easily picture “Always, Baby” soundtracking a nighttime scene in The Batman (2022). “Always, Baby” is a strong opening statement for "The Wires Out." It is moody without becoming heavy, catchy without playing it safe, and an easy addition to any late-night playlist.
