Mari Dangerfield - Eco-Fever

Eco Fever, the latest Electro-pop masterpiece by Mari Dangerfield is a one-of-a-kind album that pulsates and soars with synth music and ambient sounds. The vibrant album is a collection of tracks that has a narrative to it. She roots her song deeply with the current times. She sings of an eco-conscious world in which she is but a spec. Often times that’s what anxiety feels like, life is zooming past you and you can’t match its speed no matter how hard you try! Mari Dangerfield speaks about this and more.  A Beat that Bites by Mari Dangerfield She really isn’t beating around the bush when it comes to the album because she comes in guns blazing with Eco-Anxiety. The shimmering bassline of the track paired with the atmospheric sounds adds a tonne of texture to the track. She sings with such awareness that baffles you. It is impossible to not re-evaluate our situation as humans on Earth.  How did your personal journey towards environmental consciousness influence the songs on "Eco-Fever”? I've been aware of and have deeply cared about the climate crisis since my early teenage years so I guess I was going to write about it eventually. As the years go on, I think my understanding of it grows more and more so I'm always learning new things about it I hadn't realised. In more recent years, I've come to know about the fast fashion industry's enormous impact. The album clearly originates from a real space of experience. So many are quick to invalidate the climate crisis and anxiety. In a time like this, it feels great to hear artistic expression and validation of both. We’ve all heard of Climate Anxiety now, how did it affect the album or rather how did the album help your climate anxiety? The first song I wrote that made the EP called "Eco-Anxiety" was written at the beginning of the 2020 pandemic. I was feeling quite down about life and the reports going around the possible origins of the pandemic being unnatural contact between humans and wild animals made me think about the climate crisis and aggravated my fears. Music and Environment She continues to blow our minds with the plethora of sounds that she uses in the album,. She makes so many statements that are controversially and undeniably relevant. Each track leaves you with a new thought and question, it almost has you jotting down points to research after. The fact that we learn and are moved by this album is a mark of true craftsmanship.  The soundscape of the album is lush. How did you incorporate electronic pop elements into the environmental sounds and themes of your album? I think I did it the other way around. The sounds in "Eco-Anxiety" range from a woodpecker pecking a tree in my garden to geese on a farm where my cousin had her wedding. I also used a plugin called movement that creates natural sounds like the sound of running water in a waterfall. There are certain sounds that lend themselves to being used for an impact, transition or even a beat. How do you envision your music impacting listeners and inspiring them to take action for the environment? I don't think you can predict how anyone will react to your music, particularly when it's conveying a message. I think if it gets people thinking about it, perhaps in ways they weren't aware of before that would be a start. The bulk of the need for action lies with certain individuals in power who have the ability to make huge decisions that would make a big difference. If people that these individuals make money from begin retracting it in a big way, I think that's where an impact can be made. Haul of Music She literally sings about the fashion Hauls that internet influencers do while life isn't as comfortable for a lot of the world. There is a continuous beeping that somehow amps up the tension within a track, almost putting us in her position of anxiety. It's a masterpiece, the way the track crescendos. The creativity on the album is seriously off the charts. Were there any challenges or obstacles you faced while developing the concept of "Eco-Fever"? I did hit a creative wall at one point, mostly for personal reasons. "Ruins' got me through that. Eventually, "Eco-Fever" was the song I wrote to complete the project. Which song from the album is closest to your heart or is your favourite? I think "Eco-Fever" is my favourite. It's quite a simple song in a way but I think its essence comes from my heart. Mari and Leaving a Mark The album is filled with some of the most honest and heartbreaking tracks. It holds a mirror to the capitalistic world. We clearly see the world end rather than capitalism. What drives the point home is “They say that the world is ending.”.  Have you made any changes to your touring practices or live performances to reduce your carbon footprint? As a small act, I think my footprint is already quite low compared to other acts. I also perform solo most of the time, with my whole rig fitting inside a suitcase, so I'm usually able to travel using public transport or an electric taxi. I buy anything I wear, including for the stage, second-hand or ethically. “We’re in ruins like the ice caps melting in the sun.” This quirky track truly puts her head space into perspective. She is going through the last straws of a relationship and she compares the situation to the IceCaps, truly blowing your mind. She expertly delivers each melodic syllable with a drive that can be done by no other.  Have there been any stories shared by listeners that have particularly touched your heart so far? I was very surprised by the reaction to "Ruins" when it came out. I had someone on tiktok say it really spoke to them because they were going through a breakup. Onwards for Mari Dangerfield Finally, can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives related to environmentalism that your fans can look forward to? At my next show in Bristol I'll be hosting a fashion swap-shop, where people will be able to bring unwanted clothes to exchange with other attendees for free. I'll also be selling a selection of clothes that have featured in past music videos, photo shoots or live performances. If I can, I hope to do it more at other shows. The album has so much character, a series that showcases the same is The Politician. I cannot tell you how good the writing in this series is and even the little I say will not be enough. Payton (Ben Platt) runs for elections, keeping climate change at the forefront of his campaign. Any of the tracks from this album would work wonderfully in the series. The album is everything, it is striking, charged, melodic, and aesthetic and moves you, even jarring you to a large extent. It is dangerous how good this track is. I believe that Mari Dangerfield deserves all the attention in the world as it is unapologetically rooted in the present.
