Diego Philips - I Want to Laugh Until I Cry

I Want to Laugh Until I Cry is a song that wants you to sit in the emotions it evokes. Diego Philips hides nothing, his voice as raw and bare as the sound. With just a guitar, a cello and his voice for most of the record, it's a song that feels like it's a letter. A prayer, to live happily as much as you can. To appreciate every moment of happiness and not let it be drowned out by pain. The cello is is as much a singer as Philips is. I've always loved how the sound of the cello makes me feel. All encompassing, expanding and spilling from inside of me when I can't hold it in anymore. Shizuku Tatsuno does exactly that, the crests and fall of the instrument beautifully played to shape the song. Moments of silence is so rare in music today, but it is some of my favourite things to look out for. In this song, silence gives space for you to sit in the feeling that it creates, the intimacy of the moment reinforced. This is a song for you as much as it is for himself. And you listen as if you are right there with him. Like a lullaby sung to your beloved next to a fire on a cold night. A warmth better than the burning fire, even during the darkest of days. This project was the artist's way of piecing himself together "by doing something so raw and emotional, where I couldn't hide." And he has definitely succeeded.
