Cris Cap - Young Gun

Young Gun starts with a nostalgic keyboard and drum line. When the featured artist, Hudson Hayes, starts singing, you are immediately drawn to what he is saying, vocals clear and bright. Cris Cap weaves the production around his lyrics, the rhythmic predictability of the music allowing for the vocals to shine through. This also means that it makes sure that you are paying attention to the lyrics. Cris Cap starts the lyrics off by talking about how his younger self would let someone he longed for slip by because of fear. Despite this rather sad opening of the lyrics, the song is undeniably optimistic. The music, too, lends itself to this settled and joyful optimism, with the pattern set early in the track never becoming rigid or boring. The sad verses give way to a hopeful chorus with lyrics that instill confidence. The bridge solidifies the happy ending with the lyrics, and then the key change to the final chorus gives you that euphoria that comes from the song shifting up the scale. The production allows for the uncertainty that this song talks about but also lets us know that this story has a happy ending. I could easily imagine this track playing at the end of a summer coming-of-age story as we see the protagonist who has lived, lost, and learnt. For Cap, this song was a way to reconnect with the younger version of himself. "I wanted to remind him—and anyone who has ever felt stuck in their own fears—that love is worth the risk." And while reminding his younger self, he created a song that feels like a love letter to all of ours.
