We Are Space Horses-Apologia

We Are Space Horses will be your bovine ride through a parallel dimension. If their music doesn’t give you picturesque wormholes to other universes, take a step back and look again. Psychedelic rock gets a herd of pure-breds that don’t mind galloping off track. Now that the threshold of horse puns is completed, let’s get into their debut album, Apologia.  At the surface, this is rock with a whole lot of imagination. The band is treating the surface tension as something to be tested. Chord progressions will remind you of bands like The Pineapple Thief. Tones are curated to ensure the theme is altered as per the desired effect. To Let Go… Absolutely is the opening single. It leads from a prance to a gallop, although in a measured and calculated sense. Yet, there is nothing that feels more organic than We Are Space Horses. Time signatures alter around this coordinate warp. I was enamoured especially by the unique vocal performance, something that expelled all elements of mediocrity. There is a lucid transition to Absolutely Haunted, after this performance. It must be nothing less than liberating to listen to this live, as captivating as the album is turning out to be.  As rhythms roll into reveries We are in metal territory with the sludge bass riff for Haunt. It has masterful tones aligned-things that Psychedelic Porn Crumpets seem to bank on in their albums. We Are Space Horses know that these dimension jumps are in their control. There is a bluesy spine to the material of this book, and they balance the groove well. Vocals shift from a soft vocal delirium to a harder delivery. Gritty, unmatched in energy-this song has had a prelude unlike any other. From Let Go…, you’re looking at a Pink Floyd transition all the way to Have A Cigar’s riff. God is a Ghost continues the effect, though there is more prog rock embedded in this aura. The lead vocals sound like Steven Wilson’s in Blackfield, yet We Are The Space Horses are scripting their own legacy. I have never wanted to dive into a band’s background of influence this much in many years.  We continue the psychedelia in Ketoacidosis. This is the most “TOOL” level of prog rock we can reach. Time signatures and vocals splice to make a new DNA, one that We Are The Horses would be proud to claim ownership of.  By the time you reach the closer Justification to Build a Monument, you are in this forged planet of dreams and reveries. The band has taken you on a voyage through colours and frequencies you would have never expected. Their music is uniquely theirs, a pulse that cannot be measured by mere comparison. Suspiria(2018) is one movie that immediately appealed to me for this kind of music. You can catch more of this band with music they will surely release soon. This album has all of their best, follow them on Spotify for more!
