Scared of Sharks - Last Train to Wyong
Scared of Sharks is a punk-rock’n’roll powerhouse that emerged from Mogareeka with a playful attitude and a knack for unfiltered energy. Formed in 2016 to play the Cobargo Folk Festival, the band has evolved into a staple of Australia’s east coast music scene. Now based in Wollongong, they’ve built their reputation playing everything from intimate backyard gigs to iconic venues like Melbourne’s Cherry Bar. With Taylor Shwifty on vocals and guitar, Tim Shady on drums, and Loui Crouton on bass, Scared of Sharks delivers a sound that’s equal parts chaotic fun and raw musicianship, all wrapped in a distinctly DIY ethos. Their latest single, Last Train to Wyong, is a chaotic, joyous sprint through a unique soundscape that only Scared of Sharks can create. There is something clunky about the start that just holds your attention in a firm grasp. The punk energy is off the charts, but there’s a rock’n’roll swagger here—a playful, loose vibe that suggests these guys are having way too much fun. The band creates this janky and unstoppable momentum to the song that has us invested through and through. Taylor’s vocals punch through with a mix of grit and cheek, spinning a tale of misadventures on the titular “last train,” while Tim and Loui keep the rhythm pounding like a heartbeat after a sprint. The track fits in like a jigsaw puzzle in “Am I Ok?”, much like the song; the protagonist in the film is also a train wreck. The song is loud and unapologetically vibrant, an anthem to let go and let loose. It’s raw, it’s raucous, and it’s ridiculously fun, unleashing the young and wild within us all, and it seems to be the motto of Scared of Sharks after all.
