Nellie Feldmann - Turn Down My Shine
Nellie Feldmann's second single, "Turn Down My Shine" takes pain and turns it into art. The Brighton-based singer who has been slowly adding to her discography ever since the release of her 2024 debut "Feeding My Faults" proves that quality music comes from taking your time to really hone your craft. This new single is personal, vulnerable and in many cases relatable. Built on crunchy 90s-inspired guitars and steady, relaxed drums, the song is slow and melancholic. But it is also quite powerful. Its relatively slower pace works in its favour. It gives Feldmann's warm, soulful vocals plenty of room to tell the story. She croons about the emotional damage caused by a narcissistic relationship, especially the agony of constantly being misunderstood and made to feel "small." As if the perpetrator is "taking away your shine." The song captures the aftermath of coming out of an abusive relationship perfectly. You know that feeling of finally speaking up after staying silent for too long? Yeah, the song makes it feel cathartic. The production is clean and sorted. The chorus returns eventually, the guitars amplify, the drums get louder and Feldmann's vocal delivery becomes more confident and assertive. It's almost as if she is reclaiming every bit of self-worth that someone else tried to take from her. If you are a fan of artists like Halsey or Lorde, this song is made just for you. It's the kind of song that would fit perfectly in a movie like It Ends with Us, a flick that portrays the reality of being in a toxic relationship.
