Lily Roche - Home Is a House You Built
There is a slow and subtle brilliance that Lily Roche brings to the table with her latest release, Home Is a House You Built. The singer/songwriter and producer is a powerhouse of creation. She has her own raw and touching perspective on heartbreak, life, and just the complexities of every day. The album is a mix of themes and genres; she gives us a slow sort of bubble pop that can either put your heart in dance mode or wilt with the weight of emotions. Lily Roche and The mistaken One Most of the instruments she uses in her music don't overwhelm her in any way. She performs a delicate tightrope walk with her instrumentals. Especially in The One, the instrumentals are on par with her, almost as though she is drowning in her own musical world. The lyrics indicate the same as well. She sings of a love that she believed would be the one, and yet her love didn’t believe in them. This track is quite jovial for a heartbreak number; this is an apt opening number to the album. Broken Ceramic Most of the songs on this album are heartbreak numbers, and a song that particularly stands out is Broken Ceramic. She does not hold back when it comes to describing the theft of her youthful love. The track is especially moving as she has peppered the song with her voiceovers, as though she reads diary entries that are directed at her lover. The electric guitar finally drives this home by the end of it, the perfect crescendo to the number. The problem of loving and being left behind. Abandonment isn’t the first thought that comes to your mind when you surrender yourself to feel love. Home is a House you Built In a twist to the mainstream, Lily has placed the title track at the end of the album, making her listeners work for context. The track is a hazey number that is texturally different from the rest of her album. She allows the music to take over our souls. The young artist has proven to the world that age is just a number and that you can write verses and sounds that can make a noisy baby stop and observe you in wonder. The track is filled with just sounds of heavy and patterned breathing—performance art in sound format. This entire album has so much potential to be in a series like The Politician. The protagonist is in constant heartbreak as his first ends up in a heartbreak as well. The detailing that Lily Roche brings to the table is mind-blowing. She is a music bender of the current time.
