We Are Space Horses

We Are Space Horses

We Are Space Horses is a psychedelic rock band from Somerville, MA made up of singer / guitarist Kevin Vanderhoof, bassist Gabbi Vanderfood, and drummer Eric Hochwald. We Are Space Horses formed in 2017 in Stroudsburg PA. Kevin was alreadyinvolved in the Stroudsburg music scene playing bass for stoner/doom metal band King Dead, and he wanted to create his own project that displayed his love for 60s/70s psychedelic and progressive rock. There he met Gabbi, a talented bass player who hasa love for indie and alternative rock. They then formed a band called the Equestranauts with a local drummer and melded their influences of psychedelic, progressive, stoner and alternative rock to write and record an album called Apologia. Often asked by fans “what’s an Equestranaut”, they changed their band name to the answer to that question: We Are Space Horses. After completing the recording of Apologia in Stroudsburg, Gabbi and Kevin moved to Boston where they met Eric Hochwald of Moon Machine in late 2018. Eric was quickly enamored by We Are Space Horses’ unique blend of styles and joined the band as their drummer. They began playing shows in the area, integrating into the local alternative and psychedelic rock scenes. The completion of Apologia was delayed by everything imaginable: recording problems, a wedding, a global pandemic, a baby born, and out of state moves. Finally, the album was completed in 2023, combining the original recordings done at Rock Hard studios in Stroudsburg with a self produced drum recording done in Sum Studios in Malden MA. The album was mixed by Eric, andApologia will now be released on December 29th, 2023. We like to describe the style of music on Apologia as “if Pink Floyd was influenced by Tool and not the other way around” or “indie doom”. The music is more genre bending, dynamic, and brooding than the average psychedelic rock band, partially due to Kevin’s love of the experimental rock bands Swans and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The lyrics touch on personal topics, as “Apologia” means “a formal defense of one’s opinions or actions”, such as life after addiction, loss, religion, and childhood trauma. If most psych rock can be described as “sunny”, Apologia on the other hand would be the perfect psych album for the cold winter months.
