Jonathan Grow-3
Jonathan Grow can compose visuals with his melodies that many will immediately emotionally link to. Perhaps the nature of him being a self-taught pianist in the beginning has had a profound impact. His compositions will leave you in moments of deep thought and a cloud of creativity that you can harvest. His latest EP is called 3. 3 songs that initiate it all. Les Trois Vies de Marie-Laure is the opening single. Its brevity holds the nature of the arrangement to be heartfelt. There is a rooted rhythm section you can hear all throughout, while still having leads that have beautiful resonance. Not in the sound itself, but how you hum the melody out of memory. It reminds you of the montage scene from Up, all the transitions being tailored to how the notes play out. The careful consideration of minor notes with a happier, levitating setting is what makes it a soothing and calming track. Le Vol will make you feel like you’re listening to a Zimmer composition. The flurry of arpeggiated notes has strong, developed character. It is keeping the canvas prepped for the masterpiece that is to show itself. Jonathan Grow keeps the chorus melody memorable every time, not adding unnecessary layers to show his virtuosic talent. You can sing the song after it has ended, because of how it tattoos your conscience. As the longest song in this EP, it has a wide range of emotions, easily one of the best pieces he has written. It is this powerful penmanship in visualising notes that make his arrangements really worth exploring. This EP has a myriad of characters, even bringing on some elastic nature, returning to the core melody as well. Especially in Le Vol, he adds string textures that add another plane of character and revolution in the song. By the time you reach Devenir, you’re amazed at what al Jonathan Grow has made to experience. It is a test, a stimulation of all the senses with care and sensitivity. Dramatic entourages will also visit you in the last track. It prepares you for what Jonathan might have next for us. Contextually or without, he is dedicated to creating a series of experiences that create the desired effects in your mind. A lot is being said in this instrumental album, you should tune in to know what that might be like. You can almost visualize a singer taking centre stage and singing along to these wondrous notes that he has prepared. This EP is one of Jonathan Grows’ best work. It metastasises the environment required to actually enjoy music. Then, it helps you settle into it. His work like A Travers En Ville is astonishing, the way he ties together aspects of his music.
