Bones in Butter-Cosmopolis

Bones in Butter have had their foothold on the scene for some years now. It is their characteristic music, with their unique composition techniques, that make them such a standout act. Infused with drama, character and all spectrums of emotion, they return with their most unique album yet. Mr. Finch, please take notes, for your filmmaking might get inspired from this. This is called Cosmopolis.  There is a standout concept album in front of you that showcases a cross-section of the whole world-in one slice. This is your apple pie, and our cores are too rotten to realise we’re munching on something rancid. Bones in Butter weave theatricality, storytelling and evocative melody on their latest album with a lot of charm. Their lazy drawl felt in You Just Drowned has that exact theme taking over like a storm cloud. Milutin Krašević uses more of a spoken word style narration for the verses, using the chorus to deliver his warm, crisp vocals.  The funk hunger is funded with Dumped. You might assume you’re listening to Iggy Pop, but there is a lot of new wave that creeps up. The band mixes times of music with the sign of the times. This is to cater to all the lusts you have felt in your life, sharp commentary taking over. A New Generation, Pt. II, comes next. It is Luna Škopelja who leads with her haunting vocals, while the defining bass of Dejan Škopelja demands your attention. The band seem to have found a middle ground in the middle of an island, and all the land is theirs.  Skunks! gives more of a punk rock attack that is the script pick up you needed to hear. If you have heard of Bones in Butter before, this song ties back to those times very well. Contrast that with They All Shine for You, and you have a band that projects their versatility with class. Krašević’s vocals have their moment in the limelight, but the unique lyrics springboard him above the rippling water. Todor Živković knows not only how to write the guitar melodies, but to have them make the surreal cage that the track is confined to.  If you have had a moment to discover this band while reading this, you’ll know how far they can stretch themselves. There are moments of funk, indie rock, new wave, ska and grooves from the deepest letters of the encyclopedia. Bones in Butter don’t just make music, they discover more on the journey to be able to express themselves. It is the hallmark of a band that doesn’t chase clout, but has real music fans chase them. Just to find some meaning and balance. Cosmopolis is undoubtedly their crowning achievement, and every member shines through in their roles/  I would easily fit this in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon (2022), but no one movie can do justice to this spectacular album.
