Delivering a cover of a classic can be risky business. That is if you’re not as suave as Thrillkiller. They are true Michael Jackson fans with the way they detail the sound. Creating the perfect sound environment, these guys have a promise in their songs not many artists can give. This is a cover of the MJ classic, Dirty Diana. The King of Pop would be proud is an understatement. They make a devilishly detailed intro to precise vocal output that has been furnished. The synth slowly soaks up the silence, while the vocals have pitch precision to another degree. The chorus is what will blow you away, the ethereal mix of guitar and synth bringing the house down. The vocals by Thrillkiller are crystal perfection here as well, not compromising on any eye for detail that MJ used to have in his songs. If you’re wondering whether these kids can bring in the atmosphere which the King could for his live shows, you better bet in their favour. Thrillkiller and their fusion of rock and synth creates a dreamy, explosive atmosphere that has an organic and fresh build. This is one song I would have loved to see as a cover, on This is It, the MJ documentary. I have been a long time fan and usually sigh at covers that try to bring in a “twist”. Here, the hats are tipped off in honour, without trying excessive stunts that might diminish the message and tone of the song. The song has a perfect story arch making Alex a one of a kind story teller. The track has simple lyrics, but it most definitely does not lack depth. The modern day poet writes lyrics that explore themes of love and loss. This makes the track upbeat and vulnerable at the same time. She speaks of trying to let go of a relationship without the bitter after taste of the anger. It isn’t just her pen and vocals that makes the song a masterpiece, it is every note that is played by the guitar and the drums that drives this new single to perfection. She honestly has a new age rock Avril Lavigne but with a little more rock and way less punk. A film that embodies similar rage is The Other Woman by Nick Cassavetes. The film follows three women who are getting played by the same man. It is a comedic genius. Over and Out would be a perfect addition to The Other Woman. Under Delusion-Burning Under Water
Under Delusion are the band that will be the soundtrack for a lot of your life. Their relatable yet unique lyrical approach with melding styles always makes for an exciting listen. With this single, they climb the ladder and watch it all from a distance again. We’re going below sea level for this. This single is called Burning Under Water. A band like this has an innate ability of combining styles like electronic with the live energy of rock. Not only does it weave into each other perfectly, but it seems wrong any other way. The lyrics make Under Delusion bards of the brutes-bringing the soul while using their signature attack sound. As the riffs overlap and create the sound sheet they do, there is enough space to enjoy just the instrumental part. For the verse, just a sparse melody accompanies, are you are invested deep in the words. Their power single Fairy comes to mind, how well they manipulate the arrangement to feel the power of each statement. The synth rock lives, and thrives, with Under Delusion. Worry not, for the kind of they create is artwork worth a million words. Breathe in the aggression, breathe out the exhilaration. I would love to use this track in the movie Transformers:Age of Extinction (2014). Though Linkin Park sound tracked a lot of the film, I feel this song by this stellar group would equally shift the tides. Rye Catchers do know how to create some moody, interesting vibes. The band recently released their album Mixed Messages, that has some of their best music composed. From party energy to a relaxed dinner, they seem to have calculated it all. This single is a single History-Nikki Simmons Reprise. Look at the world through several different world views. Perhaps it can change your outlook as well. Rye Catchers invite Nikki Simmons to do her own vocal take on the song. The result is an electric, thematic bonanza that adds a lot more colour. There are many more layers to entice you, while the vocals play an important role in the audio dynamics. Higher pitch elements create an electric feedback between the original vocals by David McClintick Roberts. We explode into an indie rock delight with the chorus, and the pulse is audibly higher in this one. Revisiting the opening song of the album with a different dynamic is definitely worth the frisson it produces, while creating the same story with a different narrative.
