Dissecting Peggy Lee One of the salient features of the album lie in the fact that the lyrical narrative has been crafted in a manner that is reminiscent of poetry. Taking a page out of the books of blues music, the vocals are often portrayed as a 'dictation' rather than a song. This encapsulates the raw emotive quality of M.Krebs' music that puts them a notch above the rest of the competition. After the opening track called "John Prine" which is followed by the title track of the album, Peggy Lee quickly picks up the pace and engulfs the listener. The production of the album is top-notch. Whether its the ambient synth sounds or the reverberating walls of overdriven guitars, each element of the music sits perfectly in the stereo field. In turn, creating a sound that is reminiscent of the shoegaze and grunge music of the late 90s. The three-piece rock outfit has truly outdone itself with its debut instalment. While a song like "Middle Ground" explores the brighter and more cheerful aspect of M.Krebs' music, the album mostly holds onto a dark and ominous tonality. The musical influences are genre-defying. While tracks like "Calm The Beast" bears resemblance to RnB and Soul music, "Eyes in the Back of Her Head" is borderline metal. The band never wavers from their signature sound of gritty vocals over hairy guitar riffs, held together by groovy basslines. Till the very end of the album, which concludes with Songs in the Key of Maynard, M.Krebs manages to create a psychedelic vibe that sounds like a lovechild of Tool and Stone Temple Pilots. M.Krebs is here to stay Dropped in early February 2023, “Peggy Lee” is technically the first release in the catalogue, making this a particularly exciting project. This is some “fresh out of the oven” independent music that fans would only expect much more exciting things to come from. In fact, the band has already stated that a second album is currently in the works. And to put a cherry on top of that, my fellow vinyl junkies, there is an LP slated for distribution in the fall via Displaced Snail Publications. The album would work well as the soundtrack for both Mystery and Noir movies. The alternative and shoegaze influences give the record the basis required for it to accompany the darker themes that are generally attributed to such works of art. Particular movies that come to mind are Requiem for A Dream, Constantine, and Taxi Driver. Shockpowder define a new era and development in sound. The music they have created is inspired by shoegaze, infusing metal like the incredible amalgam to genres it is. Joshua Scurfield founded this project in 2015, which is chock-full of the musings of a genius. It is an exploration of sound patterns that has evolved from different legions of legends. This is his latest single, Summerglow.  There is a cannon projectile known as grapeshot. A large count of projectiles packed in one, for maximum impact against infantry. Shockpowder harnesses such a sound with his latest single. From the intro, we’re subjected to an oceans' depth of just a two chord change. However, the impact is so surgical, you feel every lyrical just like you soak in the riff. The technique and work put into the sound is so special, it has a ripple effect unlike any other song I’ve heard attempted in this category. As a huge fan of Alcest myself and watching them live, there is a source of energy in their music that spirals you upwards. Shockpowder has tapped into that very essence that makes music like this wholesome. The result is a steady flow of emotions that have been validated by melody.  An incredible movie called Mysterious Skin (2004) directed by Gregg Araki comes to mind with this song. Shoegaze tears through scenes, which increase the gravity and impact of the song and effect. Flutter, Feverdream and Oxygen are some really cool tracks by Joshua you must check out. The Agency… have a special effect of bringing the moment to you. As enigmatic as their personality, it is possible you’re left watching a thriller movie with one episode after another gripping you. An incredible journey is experienced in every second you listen to them. With The Samphires, they release a new song called Harbour Song. The theme is rich within this.  Like a lullaby, the opening of the song is a simple two chord change. While you’re invested in how the song unfolds, you also patiently wait for the colours to change. Choosing a band collaboration that aligns with their interests is amazing. It is like finding the right camera for the frame, and the scenes fall within like magic. It is the exploration of a sound that is haunting, yet innocent in a way. The Agency…create quite the melodic canvas to listen to the song, slowly unravelling itself while choosing mysterious threads to connect. It is like listening to a nu-shoegaze flow, while vocals will put you in a limbo of surrealistic blankets. Contrasts are measured perfectly per verse, especially in the vocals. The rhythm section is rich with the piano background along with the strings.  The instrumentals become denser till a point where they seem to match frequency.
