Choosing genres that one wouldn’t think of putting together, they create delicious cocktails of cotton candy and rust. Industrial rock marries Trip-Hop. What’s the Use? Is their latest single. In many ways, the beat reminds me of Dave Grohl’s single with Trent Reznor and Josh Homme. Reznor has the ability to mould the texture to a cinematic reprise if desired. Elohyek use an alteration of the Mantra like beat to create a dreamy verse section. Riding on the clip-clopping hooves of the drum, the vocals are spaced out, yet in psychedelic shards. It reflects vocal patches of Tame Impala, or maybe even Babe Ruth or the Psychic Ills. Drawing you in, you’re restricted to this box till the opening comes. What an opening it is. The contrast of the gentle guitars to the overdrive kicking in is the life source songs like this need. You can hear Ruiz! from a mile away. There’s good reason for that, you’ll see him set up his multi-instrumental rig and have the time of his life performing on it. With popular songs like Love is Blind bringing him indie musician fame, all playlists love him for his delightful cocktails. He outdoes himself with his latest fun single, Stupid Old Git. Though this is an insult I haven’t used before, the psychedelic tones will ensure that you pay attention to the instrumentals and not just the lyrics. I feel like the song has a culmination of many different textures Ruiz! puts together, with different tools, he might have not used before. You’ll hear the synth to be the most distinct, a sound bite of classic rock that he has utilised to his advantage on this song. What’s surprising is that you can hear the bass line pretty distinctly, understood because it is his primary instrument. It makes for some delightful transitions and styles, while still solidifying his position as a jack of all trades. The lyrics come as a punchline in the chorus, which is honestly what I was waiting for and expecting. Ruiz! makes indie music look like the promised land. He’s making all this talent look way too easy. I would imagine this to go very well in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) for the kind of scene transitions Ritchie uses.
