ndge-Funk You
1 h : 56 min

Drop a debut like ndge for creating a fanbase. When nothing is known, first impressions matter. With relatively nothing known, we dive into ndge’s music. His first single is called Funk you, and it’s all about the grooves and rhythms. This song can probably change your life. This is one video you have to watch with the song. Equally entertaining, ndge picks up a quick tempo in this single. It flows quick, recedes and whips back into shape. The layers in the instrumentals are the highlight, everything overlapping in perfect time. If he is giving the bird, he is giving it in style. The bassline, piano and guitar rhythm show a syncopation and close quarter ballet like no other song I’ve heard in a while. Short and sweet, it is one song that can be the opening and closing to your party. Keeping it amped throughout the song, you’ll regret it when it ends. This is a promising debut for a prolific composer and funk architect. There is a possibility you’re going to love this more than you thought. Grateful for that loop button, aren’t we? I’d imagine a scene from Superbad, Project X to have this song in their playlist. A great cutaway scene, it brings a lightness and feel to the scene like no other. Short, it can be dramatized in any way, and has a levity to it as well. Listen to ndge’s track and follow him for more catchy songs that are to come!

JUNK- Chromatose
16 h

JUNK released their first album- Chromatose and it is nothing short of an enigma which features Dirty D and Dubl B. Dirty D is the saxophone player and Dubl B is the Bass player and a music theory genius. Chromatose is so satisfying to hear, it feels like they scratch an itch that you never knew existed deep within your brain. It has this quality that is so striking but is as smooth as silk on a baby’s bottom.  Chromatose and Blow The Album by JUNK begins with Chromatose, the single that is an eclectic mix of rock, punk and Jazz. The song has a brilliant arch within itself. The music tips its hat slightly to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen as it softens towards the end. None of the above has an unusual start with an almost psychedelic vocal work. It warns the listener of the epic Saxophone and Bass solos that are yet to come. The track is elevated by the electric guitar that riffs the song to life! If the album was a movie, you can imagine that the story reaches its climax at Blow. The number begins with a striking bass entrance. Don’t get me started on how the Saxophone has you grooving to it in a trance-like state. The medley of the two instruments creates such an arsenal of feelings within you, it almost gives you whiplash.  Frogadelic Frogadelic is a track that is extremely different from the rest of the tracks on the album. It draws from nature sounds, especially the frog. This happens because of the Guiro and the Bird Water Whistle, two musical instruments that imitate nature noises. Frogadelic takes you by surprise because up until now, your mind was blown by some brilliant Jazz music. All of a sudden you hear nature. You don’t know why but your body begins to groove to this new quality of music. Frogadelic feels like you had some funny brownies in the middle of a forest and are touching grass with a newfound sense.  Everything Everywhere All at Once is a beautiful film that has many nominations under its belt. The film is shedding light on a surrealist form of art and storytelling. One of the cast members Stephanie Hsu is a skilled absurdist and alternative theatre artist. She once played a hand on stage. The kind of imagery and feelings the album evokes and the film evokes is very similar in nature. The album has so many possibilities to play with as well as it has such a wide variety of tunes within it. You pick a scene and the album has you covered with a soundtrack that fits as background. It is guaranteed that the first album by JUNK will floor you with its sheer skill of production, intrumentals and detailing. It comes as such a surprise that they don’t have many followers. I am assured this will change, people will not be able to resist hitting the follow button after being floored by their musical sense.

Marcus Smith-Day After Day
5 h : 11 min

Marcus Smith couldn’t wait for a band to form. He became one. A multi-instrumentalist with an edge like none other, there is nothing this man cannot do. His singles are exciting, unexpected and have a beautiful mélange of live instruments pouring in like colours from a prism. His latest single might be one of his best yet. This one is called Day After Day. With the kind of groove he maintains, he should be RHCP’s latest recruit. But, he’s breaking boundaries. With a catchy, cool rhythm section crafted with the lightness of a fruity beer-he expands what you would hear. The chorus is instantly installed as a high rise tower in your brain, and it's populating quickly. He must be a stickler for style, because he doesn’t let any rhythm settle. Constantly in varying motion, he comes in with a rap section that is tighter than most who specialize in it. Choosing unique verses and words, his sentence creation and flow manifestation is off the charts. A beautiful closing instrumental part assisted by vocals rounds off the fruitful track, engraved to the back of your head. Call on Marcus Smith to make a honey like sticky track. I’d have loved to have heard this track in Wayne’s World, one of my favourite music based films. The sticky element allows for the quirkiness as well. If the lyrics were to be read into, Groundhog Day and Palm Springs for sure. You can catch more of this incredible artist’s music with She Don’t Care, 21 Questions among some funky, groovy stuff. Make sure you follow him for more special tracks that will enter your playlist for sure.

mike by name-Feed My Dreams With Funk
4 h : 3 min

Funk might have a fresh slice of pie because of mike by name. This is an artist that wants to shine a new kind of light in funk. Not the mainstream, stadium culture one mind you, the one with intricacies. This is his latest single, a flavour packed journey. This single is called Feed My Dreams With Funk. Now, a Bootsie Collins bassline is everyone’s cup of tea. It is something that is crafted delicately, and the result is a luscious head bob to the groove. Just the opening groove should be enough for you to be completely inebriated by the sound, but there is always more. Wade into deeper water, and the chorus will kick your sunglasses off. It has the same demand and class of a Frusciante riff, and you will remain invested. The rock and funk tones coalescing creates a spectacle to listen to. It is a thoroughly enjoyable track, from start to finish. It is a pity you aren’t part of the live show to groove to this with your choicest glass of fruit wine. Summer high, better than advertised. In composing, mike by name is making a plaque with a lot of rhythm and groove. This is priceless. The movie Shaft (2000) immediately came to mind. It would be easier to place this in some RHCP song featured movie or show, but Shaft carries a style that is unique to its own character. An artist like mike by name depicts exactly that. His 2021 EP The Holy Egg is an underrated gem, just waiting to be discovered. Follow him and listen to his singles for a funky awakening.

The Armchair Captains-The Crushening
3 h : 23 min

If you haven’t heard prog-funk yet, The Armchair Captains are your answer from heaven. It is my first time listening to something so wild, which will be your case as well. In the first 30 seconds, you will experience different stages of awe. Just keep yourself emotionally ready for the freight train. This is their latest single, The Crushening.  That word isn’t real, by the way. It is a delicious concoction brewed by this band. Hence, what you hear might be an elastic yank of your imagination. Opening with a hard rock kind of swing-the tune changes with some superb groove work. A plain 4/4 would have done just fine given the circumstances as well, but I’m no prog-funk aficionado. Maybe now I am. As the lyrics are semi-rapped, the chorus brings a real hard rock punch that will knock the wind out of you. As we explore the bridge to the verse section, you’re in for a sonic treat. Sometimes while hearing the song, I feel I’m not worthy of listening to something so exciting. The Armchair Captains came and saw this island. They were pleased, and they conquered it. There is no resistance for something so awesome. I succumb.  Now, I feel it is criminal that people haven’t heard their music. Their 2022 album Cataclysmia has some of the most sumptuous groove that are legal-all packed in one collection. I know it’s an old one, but the shithousery in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) would be apt for this song. It is difficult to think of existing movies that could create something so special and unique. Guy Ritchie might come close. Listen to their explosive track and follow them for more unique music like this!

Blackfoxy-African Beat
4 h : 9 min

Blackfoxy are returning us to the land of catchy, forgotten funk. Who knew that dancing to groovy music could be this easy? This group is making a refreshing addition to their evergreen catalogue of dance music, soaked in funk rhythms. This is their latest single, African Beat. Put your dancing shoes on, this is just the beginning. Maybe just hearing the bass line gets you in the mood. Perhaps, it takes longer, with the strings and beat coming in. Whether you like it or not after a point, you are on the quest to dance. The way the layers come in are very Parliament-Funkadelic, and that’s something I haven’t heard in a long time. Blackfoxy are detail oriented, they keep the pocket tight, precise and in flight. The first few bars are for you to get acquainted to the kind of song this is. Then you’re latched in, and the vocals take you away. As all the harmonics and brass section go on a gorgeous ballet, you seem to be invited by default. It is undeniably the kind of party starter you need, and the production allows you to  appreciate it all. Time to sand that dance floor with our soles.  Their popular single has been Talk about peace, and another one called The Ghetto Girl. The band is a reminder of the kind of tones and dance energy that the 70s and early 80s were made of. This would be a great song on Everybody Wants Some!! (2016) for the kind of scenes that are set up for dancing and enjoying. Follow Blackfoxy for more singles like this, and make sure that disco ball is spinning!

Ari Joshua-Rare Groove
4 h : 7 min

It’s safe to say that Ari Joshua is the king of the groove. In the indie scene, there are few performers who are as prolific as him. The way he has a spider web of projects in which he just loves to play, we luckily just love to listen. He brings the style back on the velvet cushion like he always does. This one is called Rare Groove.  Teaming with Grant Schroff, Skerik and Delvon Lamarr, this feels extra special. In the movie Gone in 60 Seconds, there is a scene when War’s Low Rider plays. As iconic as that is, Ari Joshua has a lot more sway on the funk here. Rare Groove is full of improvised grooves and layers, something you’ll hum along to while having your morning coffee. As you feel the build, you’ll watch yourself smile in the mirror. You know how the late 70s had that class of music that just felt like a good time? That is what Ari Joshua’s music sounds like. As you go ba-da-pa-pa-da, I think it’s interesting to look back at this indie musician’s fantastic portfolio of sound. It is like the dream soundtrack of every classy movie you have admired, all fully furnished by the man Ari Joshua himself.
