Daniel de Boer has had an eventful life. He will continue to do so, that is the kind of musician he is. The music he makes is of a composer and instrumentalist reading between the lines of a notation sheet. A lot has to do with emotion, expression and the natural evoking nature of music. This is his latest single, Fly Away, from his album Out of Shadows. Here, Daniel elicits freedom. The flowing instrumentals and his soft voice bring the essence of the song in lucid, small bits. Read through the message any way you want, the spirit is quite exciting to witness and listen to. In ways, the song brings the levity of a Jacob Collier track, while Daniel is an expert in keeping it simple. When harmonics come in, they shine-and he takes the background. The production of the song allows it to be experienced for the multi-layered pudding it is. Scoop up enough of a slice, you’re in the zone for dessert. The unique approach to the groove makes it unlike any pop rhythm, yet has the framework that would suggest otherwise. This is a musician who has worked with the Metropole Orchestra, the Celebrity Edge Theatre Ensemble and Holland Opera. You expect excellence because it's clear to see and hear. His 2023 EP Mother Earth is as incredible as any song he has put out now. I would love to see this song in the movie titled with the same name, Fly Away (2011). Many elements match, and closer towards the joyous ending of the movie this song would be perfect. The music video is a piece of art and a must-watch. Alex Wellkers gets up close and personal with his latest album, Fly Away. As a songwriter, he firmly believes in the aspect of storytelling, which has made his legacy till now. While composing, performing and producing all his music, he is able to orchestrate the feel extremely well. His latest album is as raw and real as he has got. Opening with You Want Us, Alex Wellkers breaks the invisible barriers down with an acoustic and just his voice. There are harmonies that coalesce gently, but do not take attention away from the lyrics. In all his compositions, this is an amalgam which Alex has ensured maintains its composure. We Celebrate has a post grunge effect to the acoustic track, inspiring you to experience the ballad as a showcase. The percussion is really interesting in this one, having a dramatic shift from one part to another. You might even feel like you’re listening to an offshoot of Alice in Chains, the tones having the hard rock edge to it as well. From indie to hard rock A softer approach nears us with his next song, Making Progress. String and piano elements form a melodic dreamcatcher, on which Alex Wellkers lays his vocals. It proceeds with the cinematic expression that the scene needs to depict. Chord progressions might be the same, but the harmonies call the spotlight for rich, unique drama. As a scene, you can imagine Alex Wellkers walking up to his mic at home and making this ridiculously catchy music. If one song is a cruise in the sky, the other is the rocket speed elevation that you want to hear from a rock song. The tempo and rhythm is in constant ebb and flow, demanding the elastic nature of your attention. Niemals jemals da gewesen sees Alex singing in German, exploring his multilingual skill and ability to transpose a thought with ease this way. This makes you expect so many different layers from a musician, someone who can break the glass ceiling of genres and styles. I found myself drawn to the style of songs like We Try Our Best. Alex Wellkers brings optimism with style and a unique energy to his music. It is one of my favourite riffs from an indie musician, making the effect adhere to his sudden switch. What You Think Right Now keeps the hard rock tempo going, showing how Alex can shift from something like Making Progress to this kind of tone. What you have seen is a metamorphosis through music, and I feel a movie like American Ultra (2015) is the perfect kind of movie to show a transition like this.
