Cold Equations - Identity Crisis
4 h : 20 min

The latest single by Cold Equations, "Identity Crisis" is a powerful addition to the band's growing discography. The song starts off with a filtered guitar strum that quickly builds into a full-blown rock track as the rest of the band joins in. The sound is reminiscent of alternative acts like Alterbridge, with clear influences from more modern shoegaze acts like Queens of the Stone Age. The track explores themes of existentialism, with lyrics that delve into the struggles of self-identity and the search for meaning in life. The hard-hitting alt-rock number is an emotionally charged journey, with the band delivering a captivating performance that draws the listener in from the first note. One of the standout elements of the track is the excellent mix, which allows each instrument to shine while still creating a cohesive whole. The drums are subtle yet powerful, driving the song forward with precision and force. The bass tone is impeccable, providing a solid foundation for the rest of the music to build on. The guitars are distorted and cranky, bringing forth the enraged nature of the lyrical narrative. The use of dissonant chords creates a sense of looming darkness that adds to the overall mood of the song. Cold Equations is evolving after their debut Ghost Town Cold Equations' history as a band is one of subversion and clandestine songwriting, with guitarist/vocalist Drew Kohl exploring darker themes in late-night writing sessions. The band's debut album, "Ghost Town," was recorded in Nashville with engineer/producer Brendan St. Gelais. The lineup solidified with Ryan Dishen on drums and John O'Brien on bass, and the band spent a year writing and rehearsing before recording their follow-up self-titled record with Paul Moak and Zack Zinck at Smoakstack Studio. In conclusion, "Identity Crisis" is a song that would fit perfectly in a movie soundtrack, adding an extra layer of intensity and emotion to the visuals on screen. The song's hard-hitting nature would make it a great fit for an action or thriller movie, while its themes of self-discovery and existentialism could lend themselves to a drama or animation flick. Titles that come to mind are 'Memento' and 'Rango'. Overall, Cold Equations' "Identity Crisis" is a must-listen for fans of alternative and shoegaze rock.

Cold Equations-Eraser
4 h : 12 min

Cold Equations have an approach to rock that is against the grain. The Nashville based music group have flipped the switch on what the mainstream is to create a faction. This is a growing fanbase of music lovers who stay for the story and the symphony, equally. Their latest song is a “wish to disappear” moment, a recurring feeling for many. This is Eraser. The effect is that felt in Eternal Sunshine… The song uses a brilliant chord progression to deepen the probe in the message. It is tonally perfect, yet expresses the pain and exhilaration of a moment like this. Cold Equations tend to stray away from some kind of classic rock song structure, their arrangement is reflective of the lyrics. As the chorus drops, you know the feeling reiterated with their style of executing with layers. When the harmonics come in for the second chorus, you’ll feel goosebumps as the message has really marinated. They make sure a build is organic, and the distortion changing gears to really spike the salts in the song. Eraser is one of their simplest, catchiest tunes for how it has been written. Cold Equations know exactly how to send a gift, a small piece of reality to remember.  You’ll hear them go hardcore rock and even pop rock specific. The tone lies in the feel, and that’s where they differ from their contemporaries. I would have loved to hear this in The Edge of Seventeen (2016). Their 2021 album Ghost Town is worth revisiting just for structure and emotion breakthrough. Listen to their single and follow them for more like this!

Cold Equations, a Nashville-based indie rock band, continues to push boundaries with their latest release, "Set the Boy Free." Drawing inspiration from glam and 80's pop rock, this upbeat rock number exudes a classic shoegaze vibe, reminiscent of the early works of Bryan Adams. The song takes listeners on a nostalgic journey, with warm guitar tones, saturated preamps, and precise mixing that showcases the captivating vocals. From the first note, "Set the Boy Free" grabs your attention and never lets go. The energetic guitar riffs and driving rhythm section create an irresistible groove that compels you to move along. It's a masterclass in blending old-school rock elements with modern sensibilities, delivering a fresh and dynamic sound. Thematically, the song explores the concept of freedom, inviting listeners to break free from the shackles of conformity. Cold Equations' vocalist, Kohl, captures the essence of liberation through his powerful and evocative delivery, driving the message home with every word. The mix ingeniously places the vocals front and centre. While the instruments skillfully surround and support them, adding depth and richness to the overall composition. A Rock Anthem of Liberation "Set the Boy Free" would find a fitting home in movies that delve into the theme of freedom. Two offbeat movies that come to mind are "Into the Wild" and "Moonrise Kingdom." The anthemic qualities and spirited energy of Cold Equations' latest offering would enhance these films, both known for their exploration of unconventional freedom. Hailing from Nashville, Cold Equations emerged from a subversive and clandestine songwriting operation within their guitarist/vocalist's bedroom. Dissatisfied with the Americana scene, the band embarked on a musical journey that melded indie rock influences such as Pavement, Elliott Smith, and Johnny Marr. With their debut album, 'Ghost Town,' released in 2021, Cold Equations solidified their lineup and continued to refine their sound. Their follow-up self-titled record, 'Cold Equations,' set to release in 2023, showcases the band's growth and artistic evolution. With "Set the Boy Free," Cold Equations proves once again that they are a force to be reckoned with in the indie music scene, combining elements of classic rock with a modern twist and a commitment to exploring thought-provoking themes.
