Night Far Gone wield immense power with their music. Synthwave doesn’t encapsulate what this duo do, there are more layers in the themes they explore. When you feel the nocturnal energies coursing through your body, put on your steampunk suit, crank the volume high and go for a drive chasing the lights. This is their latest album release, Runaways.
Caleb Stuffle & Carlos Herrera had some great vision while putting together this project. That’s why you see so many styles intersperse with their love for 80s rock and synth pop/rock. The opening track is the album title, and you can see that culmination of vibrant digital soundboards coming together. The combo is a cool one, soothing verse parts take you to what promises to be an explosive chorus. Filters and effects deserve to be noted, you’ll want to replicate some of those things if you love messing with new sounds.
Saturday has all the raw power of a weekend party track. You should expect nothing less from Night Far Gone. As the cascade of the guitar can be heard, so do the ripples of the synth. In no time, lyrics will be second nature to you. When they withdraw the background, you feel satiated only when the drop comes in its true, fantastic and evolved form. You’ll remember some 80s ballads with Possible. Their third single promises to be a lovely “flashlight wave” of a song. Lyrics are as poetic as they are poignant. Night Far Gone have the virtuosic know-how and feel-strong enough to always recede the instrumental background when they want to shine the spotlight. It is this kind of in-depth love for music that makes their songs stand out. You’ll hear many synthwave projects flooding their songs with effects and styles. Detail is the nuance.
Lightning promises the surprise entrance of an element. I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you, but you’ll know it was perfect the second you hear it. The soundboard becomes a mood board for them, as they share this library of styles and populate your weekend playlist. One of my favourite chorus parts is in this song, because it’s such an unexpected direction.
Night Far Gone keep the energy amplified with Waiting For You. The opening is a slow build, and you’re left with bated breath for what has to come. I really recommend headphones for their songs, if you want to hear sonic mastery. This one has more of a rock kick, really driving the wild Whitesnake kind of vibe the renaissance fan would love. This Ride develops to be the perfect night drive song, followed by Seek & Find Me and Flashbacks. The artful composition seems to be even more impressive when you hear the whole album and realise what a joyous collection of music they have put together. They surf high on the synthwave.
They have a new release called Decades, which seems to be an interesting instrumental. A band like this would be perfect for Blade Runner 2049 (2017) as well as Drive (2011). The duo’s style is on full display here, listen to the songs and follow them for a very promising catalogue to come.
