Personal details

Federica Colangelo

Pianist and composer, Federica Colangelo, was born in Rome and after studying classical piano, she moved to the Netherlands at the age of twenty, where she obtained a diploma in jazz piano and a Master's degree in contemporary composition. In Holland he began the Acquaphonica project, immediately conceived as an imaginary laboratory of his music, with which he published three albums: Private Enemy (2012), Chiaroscuro (2016), and Endless Tail (2019). A progressive discourse of research and experimentation was born, at the base of which there are his influences from jazz, from the classical music of European and American composers of the '900, such as Charles Yves, Philip Glass, John Cage and Igor Stravinsky, but also those acquired thanks to the meeting with the masters of Carnatic music (originally from South India). These musicians are based on a vast mnemonic knowledge of traditional pieces and on a deep study of improvisational language, where the rhythmic aspect is the almost absolute protagonist. A new range of compositional and language possibilities thus opens up. And it is precisely from the sum of these elements that the stylistic code of the pianist and composer is formed. Parallel to the music written for Acquaphonica, he also writes and arranges for different formations. He writes Undecided (2010 – piece for 14 elements, played by the youth orchestra of the HKU Conservatory, conducted by maestro Otto Ketting); he arranges two pieces of the Bulgarian tradition for string quintet, (Apollonia Art Festival - Bulgaria 2014); he arranged and wrote the song Graphic Work (2016) for the Civica Big Band on the occasion of the 'New Generations' event. In the years spent in Holland, India and Italy, the pianist has studied and collaborated with: Benoit Delbeq, Ned McGowan, John Taylor, Jeroen D'Hoe, B.C. Manjunath, Dr. Mysore Manjunath, Kristijan Kranjcan, Ermanno Baron, Dan Kinzelman, Simone Alessandrini, Michele Tino.
