Blindness & Light-The Ballad of Them and Us
The genre of new wave lives through us all. Although it was received as a breakthrough, it was the property of the times. Blindness & Light carry some of that energy forward, with their compositions. They might sound like a retro band, and that’s because their sensibilities are. They sound like one of those groups that sound the same live-as they are rooted to their music. This is their latest single, The Ballad of Them and Us. I especially love diving into the lyrics of this era. It is a surreal daydream, a mixture of what your dreams and reality can fissure from. With a rousing opening, we’re off with the warm, welcoming tempo of this song. The bass lead follows, with the vocals-creating a contrast in registers but aiding the melody. Scintillating background sounds are what give it the flavour of the late 80s and early 90s. There is no wonder to why these guys are in underrated band playlists-their output sound is fantastic and original to the zeitgeist they are woven into. The instrumental break is a breath of fresh air, a collection of sounds you might have not heard in a solo since the 80s. Henry Priestman collaborates in this track to create a sound that is never coming back, until Blindness and Light are putting out a new song. This would perfectly in the 2016 movie Gold and the second season of Peaky Blinders. The flowing instrumentals and rising-falling melody have a very dramatic outcome in terms of scene, so this is silver screen gold. You can also listen to Chains, Another Day and The Tannhäuser Gate. This is a prolific, active band-so you can always expect audio gems from them. Follow them to keep up with their new music!
Blindness & Light-The Old Skylight
Blindness & Light are curators of a different kind of sound. What they have created is a faction within indie rock that speaks volumes. Each song evokes a different essence, and they control the atmosphere with their unique voicing and phrasings. Art like this doesn’t come regularly. This is their latest single, The Old Skylight. If you are imagining one, assume light flooding in through a skylight. It lights up a place, from a light burn in one place to the diffused aura of the luminescence around. The architecture starts to matter. With guitars flooding the chords, it is like the wall of sound that you experience the texture through. Vocals create an engaging conversation, a tale cutting through the instrumentals. I was especially leaning towards the bassline, following its own tributary of sound. It is an incredible amount of feeling and flow that comes with the instrumental layers. Brass contains yet gives enough freedom to the background to bend out of the structure. Blindness & Light dive into the theme hard when they do, and the result is a researched piece of reminiscent art. Steady rhythm moments allow the song to spread the blot into something much larger than the song, something that remains with you like a locket. This would work fantastic in the latest season of Ted Lasso. Along with the turmoil of the team and positive takeaways on how to persevere, this song has it all. I have another favourite of theirs, The Ballad of Them and Us, which you must listen to. This is a band that will cement their sound as one of the most indulging. Listen to their single and follow them for more!
Blindness & Light-First Light of Day
Blindness & Light have always approached music with a cinematic flair. This makes it easier for us at Indiemusicflix to review their music, there is beautiful imagery entangles in the music already. With the kind of singles and albums we have heard, they are always stretching the tapestry of what is and can be possible through music. This is the closing track from their 2023 album Blindness & Light. This one is First Light of Day. If you are observing the movement of day within nature, it is dawn to dawn. When dusk falls and it all recedes, there is a pause. This band puts a recorder near the developnents of the morning. With the ambience suggesting the first break of dawn, the chords and progression suggest it too. The melting, phasing synth in the background has a multi-layered approach. Similar to the layers of sunlight, the sky and clouds-there are vivid textures to be heard. As dramatic as it is, it is beautiful to witness in itself, to make the most of what a melody could write in an observation. When the acoustic guitar and lyrics come in, you’re in that wrapped vision of nature, amidst the glory of it all. The way it all comes together is natural and gorgeous. Not only is their album something to witness and hear, but they have other singles that are actively imaginative. Mid90s (2018) would be a great movie to hear this song in. Apart from the theme and sound, there is a lot more in terms of layers in the sequences. Follow Blindness & Light and listen to their incredible music on their Spotify!
Blindness & Light-Time for Something Drastic
Blindness & Light create melodies with a lasting impression. Ever since their self-titled album dropped, there has been a craving for post rock revelations of that kind. You might have heard The First Light of Day as a single as well, and you know the different instrumental textures this band can create. The latest single is called Time for Something Drastic. Here, you’re put in a synthetic wave pool that opens up suddenly to the majesty of nature. Blindness & Light like to create a moment, so it is always a surprise what the song will feel like. The distorted guitar with a touch of reverb is the narrator for this story, and we feel like falling to its mercy. Building verse parts make for a galloping melody section, especially the rhythm being a unique element. The bass aligns just for the chorus, and takes its own tributary. Helen Reynolds joins in this track for an angelic choir element that will send shivers down your spine. The song has a beautiful quality of just harnessing energy for all to feel, and it seems created out of scratch. Something as absorbing, and pure-can be made by no one but Blindness & Light. You can hear the band’s best work on their Spotify page. Their band is becoming synonymous to exploration with instruments, so to speak. Keinohrhasen (2007) would be great for this song, as it has some really cool transitions of action. Listen to the band above, and follow them for more sorcery like this that can create a dramatic flair unlike any other!
