Vargen is rejuvenating old school rock and blues with his unique and spectacular tone. From his mesmerizing vocals to the simple but effective instrumentation, there’s a lot to learn from this music ace. “The Wolf”, which is his moniker in Swedish, has released another original called Mindy Morning as well. This is his latest single, The Bitch in Me.
Just by the way he frames his aching heart, you can hear why this will be a crowd favourite. Vargen uses his melodic voice and control on the minimal instrumentals to create something tactile yet intangible. It’s a feeling you’ve felt but never really addressed because of the pain. While the guitar tone has that crunchy British overdrive, his vocals sound more like Tom Petty. This is from the Heartbreaker years, where songs of love and loss were the echo in the Laurel Canyon. Vargen has pushed through without textbook clichés peppering the lyrics. The solo is a soulful elemental salad of the vocal lines. You’ll also hear those dreamy keys sound assisting the rhythm for a jazzy undertone in the grand finale. A musician like this will remain forever inspired by his approach and style. We can’t wait for more delicious solos like the ones in this song.
I’d attach this song in many of the scenes in the 2001 romcom, Serendipity. With iconic lines and emotive pockets found in many parts of the movie, Vargen would be the right fit. He has more singles and an album coming out hopefully soon, so stay tuned for some lovely melody making.
