The Fades remind you that post-garage rock has that same infectious energy it always did. This band has compositions that have a retro tang, while still creating something new to look forward to. Their 2020 album Ragnarok is a brilliant collection of what can be their fingerprint. This is their latest single, Small Again.
You get that Rick Springfield finesse with the song when it starts. The muted chugging guitar gives way to a galloping drum beat. The verse is prefaced with the nice guitar lick that becomes almost second nature to you, instantly. The Fades are creating that pocket of joyous music that keeps you hooked. Minimal background instrumentation allows you to focus on the lyrics while enjoying the formidable chorus which will come. You can see why The Fades want to return to innocence. It was simpler then, and you’ll always miss it. They use crisp, clear-cut tones which is more of a throwback to the songs that radio dominating music phase. The band puts together a delightful, catchy song with that drive that is your shot glass filled with caffeine. Bottoms up!
This would be quite literal and perfect for the movie Downsizing (2017). With a cast that is enviable, the plot could progress great during the climax sequence of the movie. The band is on tour right now, but if you can’t catch them don’t worry. Their 2022 album Night Terrors is something that will keep you up at night.
