Jordan Popky manages to leave a taste of ash and reality in your very core with her latest album- Sweet Degenerate. It will leave so many feelings in the pit of your stomach and it will have it churning in the best way possible. The way she manages to enter every fiber in your body with her voice and incredible instrumental arrangement. It takes artistry at another level to achieve the kind of effect on the listeners and this album is proof that she’s got it all.

Reaching Out to Jordan Popky

She begins the album with Reaching Out– an instrumental piece of art that gets your palette ready for the brilliance that is about to come your way. She follows that up with Ghost Stories, a track that makes you feel that she has done and bam, she comes back with Delicate. Delicate as a song has a quality that sounds extremely familiar while also sounding fresh. These tracks have similar textures to them. She has an eye for escalation with each track, we feel her energy through and through. 

Mahogany

This is where we hear things shift pace a little bit where we hear more and more instruments enter the game. Mahogany left me feeling that she moved from inward feelings to pushing those feelings outside in the journey so far. Of course, Last Words is where you hear this but that feeling is confirmed in Mahogany. This section of the album is where we hear the master world of the production team shine more and more. In every song, there is a story, a beginning middle and an end. Every track has a seamless journey where it slowly climbs and crescendos and holds you through and through.

Songbird

This Isn’t the last song but My God do I love it! The track is one of those songs that could end a musical where the last actor bid adieu to everyone. It sounds so similar to the last song in Hadestown where Persephone raises a glass to Orpheus. But, she doesn’t leave you with that feeling of lost disorientation. She ties the perfect knot with Something Sweeter/ Last Word/ Ghost Stories (Reprise).  This shows that she’s aware of the feeling she wants to leave us with. Not leaving us with that unsettling feeling shows that she is a responsible creator.
