Drinking Problems naturally has your hips grooving with beats so meticulously made by Emme Oneill. From the very first verse, she draws you in with her raw and emotive vocals. She sings of confiding in alcohol, it doesn’t sound as grave as whiskey lullaby but rather an upbeat listen.
The song starts off with a synth section and we hear Emme’s voice make her entrance. Her songwriting and singing style is very reminiscent of SZA. The bluesy upbeat melody paired with Emme’s soulful voice creates an experience no one expects. She speaks of not wanting to turn back to a relationship or the bottle. There is more to the song than the groovy music and its incredible layering. Layering of how deep love and overthinking don’t usually go hand in hand. She sings “You’re the reason I’m drinking. You’re the reason I’m sinking”. This encapsulates both the determination and the desperation to overcome debilitating affliction. Big Trip comes in and adds some money-worthy lines that just elevated the song as much as Emme.
The Film Birds of Prey by Cathy Prey was a monumental change for the portrayal of Harley Quinn. For the first time, she was seen without The Joker (Albeit she was pinning for him for the first five minutes). But it works wonders because she lost the booty shorts and gained a hell lotta action sequences accompanied by brilliant popping cinematography and a banger playlist. It is one of the few action movies that pass the Bechdel test and therefore must receive more credit. We can easily imagine Harley using this song to Pine over Joker before realising how much of a badass she really is!
Drinking Problems is a moving number that speaks of the pivotal problems in relationships and even post-breakups. It captures complexity which is layered with quality production work. Don’t forget to catch more work by Emme Oneill on the links attached below.
