Cold Equations have an approach to rock that is against the grain. The Nashville based music group have flipped the switch on what the mainstream is to create a faction. This is a growing fanbase of music lovers who stay for the story and the symphony, equally. Their latest song is a “wish to disappear” moment, a recurring feeling for many. This is Eraser.
The effect is that felt in Eternal Sunshine… The song uses a brilliant chord progression to deepen the probe in the message. It is tonally perfect, yet expresses the pain and exhilaration of a moment like this. Cold Equations tend to stray away from some kind of classic rock song structure, their arrangement is reflective of the lyrics. As the chorus drops, you know the feeling reiterated with their style of executing with layers. When the harmonics come in for the second chorus, you’ll feel goosebumps as the message has really marinated. They make sure a build is organic, and the distortion changing gears to really spike the salts in the song. Eraser is one of their simplest, catchiest tunes for how it has been written. Cold Equations know exactly how to send a gift, a small piece of reality to remember.
You’ll hear them go hardcore rock and even pop rock specific. The tone lies in the feel, and that’s where they differ from their contemporaries. I would have loved to hear this in The Edge of Seventeen (2016). Their 2021 album Ghost Town is worth revisiting just for structure and emotion breakthrough. Listen to their single and follow them for more like this!
