Blindness & Light are curators of a different kind of sound. What they have created is a faction within indie rock that speaks volumes. Each song evokes a different essence, and they control the atmosphere with their unique voicing and phrasings. Art like this doesn’t come regularly. This is their latest single, The Old Skylight.
If you are imagining one, assume light flooding in through a skylight. It lights up a place, from a light burn in one place to the diffused aura of the luminescence around. The architecture starts to matter. With guitars flooding the chords, it is like the wall of sound that you experience the texture through. Vocals create an engaging conversation, a tale cutting through the instrumentals. I was especially leaning towards the bassline, following its own tributary of sound. It is an incredible amount of feeling and flow that comes with the instrumental layers. Brass contains yet gives enough freedom to the background to bend out of the structure. Blindness & Light dive into the theme hard when they do, and the result is a researched piece of reminiscent art. Steady rhythm moments allow the song to spread the blot into something much larger than the song, something that remains with you like a locket.
This would work fantastic in the latest season of Ted Lasso. Along with the turmoil of the team and positive takeaways on how to persevere, this song has it all. I have another favourite of theirs, The Ballad of Them and Us, which you must listen to. This is a band that will cement their sound as one of the most indulging. Listen to their single and follow them for more!
